Bedroom Layout Basics To Create a Space You Love

Bedroom Layout Basics To Create a Space You Love

A well-designed bedroom is more than just a place to sleep; it should be a place that you actually enjoy being in.

However, even the most beautiful decor won’t feel right if the layout isn’t correct.

The foundation of every great bedroom is well-done space planning.

So, whether you’re redesigning your own bedroom or a guest room, understanding these bedroom layout basics will help to create a functional and comfortable space.

Start with the Bed Placement

The bed is the focal point of any bedroom, so its placement anchors the entire layout.

If you have enough space, centre the bed on the main wall as this creates balance and makes the space feel cohesive.

Avoid placing the bed directly in front of a window, as this will block light into the room and allow space on both sides of the bed so that it feels symmetrical.

Prioritize Clear Pathways

One of the most important layout principles is creating a smooth and restricted flow throughout the room.

You can do this by ensuring there is a clear walkway from the door to the bed.

Also, avoid placing furniture where you have to sidestep and allow open space at the foot of the bed for easy movement.

Choose the Right Bed Size

A king bed may feel luxurious, but not if it overwhelms the room. The size of your bed should complement the scale of the space.

Here’s a simple guide:

Small rooms: Full or queen-sized beds maximize comfort without crowding.

Medium rooms: A queen bed offers balance and leaves space for seating or dressers.

Large rooms: A king or California king works well and enhances the luxury of the space.

Scale is key - if the bed feels too big for the room, everything else will feel cramped.

Nightstand Placement

Nightstands enhance both the functionality and symmetry of the room.

Choose nightstands that are proportional to the height and width of the bed and leave  space for essentials such as lighting, glasses, books or charging stations.

Matching nightstands also create a polished, balanced look.

TV Placement

If you prefer a TV in the bedroom, the placement is crucial.

Some of my best tips include mounting the TV on the wall opposite the bed to save floor space, ensuring the height is comfortable viewing whilst lying down, and keeping cords hidden to avoid the space feeling cluttered.

Consider Window Placement and Light Control

Natural light is a major factor in bedroom design, but it should be paired with light control for restful sleep.

Things like avoiding positioning the bad where the sun will naturally hit your face and considering blackout window treatments are all important factors to consider.

Storage Solutions

A clutter-free bedroom promotes relaxation.

Smart storage solutions keep the room organised whilst keeping the bedroom calm.

Some of my best storage solution ideas include: under-bed storage, built-in closets and storage benches at the foot of the bed.
