How To Declutter Your Home & Refresh It For The New Year

How To Declutter Your Home & Refresh It For The New Year

This post may contain affiliate links, which means I may receive a small commission if you make a purchase using these links, at no cost to you. I only recommend products from suppliers I genuinely love and use, as an interior designer.

Knowing how to declutter your home is the first step to creating the home of your dreams.

The new year brings healthy habits in the form of gym resolutions, eating better and prioritising your health, but why not try out a new years resolution to transform your home?

While people will often wait for the Springtime, I actually think that January is the best time to freshen up and declutter your home.

Not only do you have time off during the Christmas season but homeware is often discounted. Plus, having a fresh space to start the new year allows your other resolutions room to take place.

So, if you’re wondering how to start decluttering your home when you’re overwhelmed by the Christmas decor or simply in need of some home inspiration this new year, this is for you!

How To Declutter Your Home

Over the year, we can gather random trinkets and items that just take up space in our homes. Or, we can simply neglect tidying over the Christmas period. By decluttering your home, you can remove the things that you no longer love and make way for new additions.

The first step to decluttering your home is to pack away all the festive decor. It’s sad to see them go but having them hanging around into the new year can bring down the mood in your home.

Next, planning a specific day to declutter your home is vital. Decluttering can seem like a huge task and we can often procrastinate doing it. Committing to one day during the Christmas period to declutter will mean that by the time the new year is here, your space will be both clear and tidy.

By best decluttering your home tips are to just start with one room and be ruthless with items. We often cling onto clothing or items that take up space that we never even think about. Use the Marie Kondo method. If it doesn't spark joy, it's time to let go.

Finally, as you begin to declutter your home, you’ll come to realise how the clutter affects your mind. Having a tidy space can help you to think more clearly and help you to feel reinspired, just in time for January 1st!

Ways To Refresh Your Home

Now that your space is decluttered, you can add little pieces that make your home feel fresh, so you’re ready to take the new year on.

1. Revamp Existing Homeware

We’re all guilty of purchasing those slightly cringe but cosy Christmas blankets and Christmas cushions but as the New Year approaches, it’s time to have a little revamp.

You don’t have to say goodbye to the blankets just yet (as the weather is still freezing), however, selecting a white blanket will give your room a much more airy feel.

Purchasing new cushion covers can also make a huge impact on your home. Whites, greens and light blues are really prioritised in January as they bring such a rejuvenating feeling to the home.

2. Add Greenery to Your Home

One of the best ways to freshen up your house is to simply add plants.

Admittedly, the weather can often make it difficult to keep these plants alive so even faux greenery can really transform a room. Plus, you don’t need to remember to water them!

Bringing nature into your home when the weather is freezing can also improve your mood. Succulents are long-lasting and will survive throughout the winter, so they could be a great option if you do want to have real plants.

3. Switch Out The Door Handles on Your Cabinets

I’m completely biassed but I always say that making small improvements to your home can have such a big effect.

I have an entire range of different door knobs for interior doors and affordable door handles that can help bring a room all together.

Opt for a classy Parisian home decor with gold door handles or something fresh with polished door knobs.

4. Add Fresh Lighting

The Christmas break brings about candle lighting and twinkling fairy lights, but as the lights get taken down January can feel quite dark.

Spruce up your home by adding more lighting to your areas. Add a striking ceiling light to illuminate your room or under cabinet lighting to freshen up your kitchen.

5. Add a Lick of Paint

Simply by painting  just one or two walls to create an accent wall in your home can dramatically change the space.

If you've been feeling like your living room or bedroom is feeling dark or secluded, why not try painting one of the walls a fresh light colour?

You will be surprised at the overall impact that just changing the colour of 1 to 2 walls has on the entire room.

6. Add A New Scent

The festive period brings sweet sickly scents of cookies and winter spices.

While they are loved in December, these scents can be quite overwhelming as the new year approaches.

Instead, choose a fresh scent to signify the end of the New Year. Fresh linen, vanilla, or floral scents are a great way to kick off the New Year.

7. Rearrange Furniture

You don’t even need to spend money to freshen up your space! By simply rearranging furniture, you can feel like you have an entirely new home.

Instead of having sofas and chairs tucked away in corners, try bringing them into the middle of the space instead.

Similarly, your bedroom can be transformed simply by adjusting the placement of your bed or wardrobes.

8. Re-dress Your bed

I feel like everybody is already well aware of the effect that fresh linen can have on your bedroom.

This is a great way to change your room that doesn’t break the bank. You can find affordable linen online or even in your local stores.

January is a great time of year to choose whites or light colours with a few throw cushions!

9. Switch up Your Coffee Table

One of the most stylish parts of homes is the coffee table. It’s the centrepiece that so many people see.

You don’t have to replace the entire coffee table but instead consider purchasing fresh flowers in a unique vase.

Or even try out those infamous coffee table books that everybody loves online. It may seem like a cliche but they do offer a modern look to your home!

10. Display Bright Tea Towels

We are all guilty of not replacing our tea towels often enough, right?

In the new year, toss out the festive themed tea towels and purchase some fresh new ones.

Tea towels are easily switched out and can change the vibe of your kitchen by only spending a few pounds!

11. Try Bare Floors

I love a good fluffy rug but bare wooden floors can make a statement within your home.

Additionally, during the winter, rugs can absorb moisture and make the room feel much more dingy than it would without the extra fabric.

By removing the rugs you can also make the space feel much much larger.

12. Update Your Cookware

Again, this is another thing we put off investing in but as it coincides with a popular New Year’s resolution of eating more healthy, updating your cookware can inspire you to keep that promise.

You can usually find cookware sets online or in the store that you can even match with additional appliances, such as a toaster or even your fridge.

13. Create a Space in Your Home Just for Mindfulness

Wellness is always on the agenda in the New Year, so why not make a space in your home to simply be mindful of your thoughts?

This can be as simple as a few cushions scattered on the ground where you can meditate or practice yoga. Or, you can build an entire corner in one of your rooms with seating and cosy lighting where you can retire to after the end of a long day.

Key Takeaways

Knowing how to declutter your home is the first step in making it happen in your house.

Remember to carve out a day in your schedule, start with just one room and ask yourself whether you are really going to wear, use or even think about that item again.

Then, once your space is more clear, you can add greenery, switch out door handles on cabinets, and even add a new scent to welcome the new year into your home!

Here at Boutique Handle Co, we offer affordable door knobs and door handles to refresh your home and transform your cabinet doors. Check out the entire selection here on our website!
