Living Room Interior Designs Trends That We’re Saying Goodbye To In 2024

It's officially 2024 and we are saying goodbye to a bunch of different living room interior design trends. 

The interior design industry is constantly changing and innovating, so it’s not uncommon to have to bid farewell to beloved trends to make way for new ones each year. However, this year you may be surprised at some of the living room trends that we are letting go off!

From matching furniture sets to light woods, it may be time for a total living room revamp! Keep reading to find out which trends didn’t make the cut.

1. All White Interiors

All white bedrooms were once symbols of purity and simplicity, however, in 2024, we are seeing a huge decline in this interior design trend. 

We’re actually letting go of all white interiors all across the home seemingly because despite their calming ambience, they completely lack any personality. 

In 2024, interior designers and even your amateur decorator are deciding to be brave and  embrace bolder colours, textures and adding more character to their living rooms. 

While we won’t be getting rid of the calming colours just yet, instead of whites, we are shifting more towards blush pink, sage green, and subtle pops of colour for a little more charm.

2. Minimalism

Minimalism goes hand-in-hand with the plain white interiors so it's easy to understand why this trend is becoming outdated. 

We all know how much minimalism took over the world in 2023. Popularised by the Kardashians, this trend left homes feeling sterile and boring.

In 2024, that notion has passed and we’re seeing living rooms becoming more layered and textured which cultivates a far more ‘lived in’ atmosphere. 

Minimalism will mostly be kept for clothing pieces and instead living rooms will embrace much more character and statement pieces. However, it’s not all bad for the environment as people are choosing much more eco-friendly decisions and deciding to thrift furniture instead of purchasing new furniture.

3. Wallpaper

When it comes to wallpaper, you either love it or hate it.

Wallpaper has been a trend that continuously goes in and out of style. So, although it is farewell for now, we don’t doubt it will pop up again sometime soon.

Don’t get us wrong, wallpaper has its benefits. Wallpaper is one of the easiest ways to make a statement within your home for an affordable price. 

However, in 2024, there will be less wallpaper and more wooden panelling, decorative tiles and natural features. 

Also, choosing to go with a solid wall colour will become a much more popular choice for living rooms.

4. Shutters & Blinds

Once a happy accompaniment to minimalist rooms, shutters and blinds have officially run their course. 

This design is seemingly going out of style because people are embracing a much more cosy and relaxed environment. 

Not only that but the rising energy costs may be playing a role. Curtains have additional thermal insulation that shutters and blinds just don’t provide.

That being said, with summer temperatures only rising, it will be interesting to see how this trend plays out further into the year.

5. Matching Furniture

People are embracing a much more mid century modern appeal, and relinquishing their hold on matching furniture. 

To put it bluntly, if you have matching furniture in your living room, you’re no longer cool.

Instead, people are choosing to opt for unique pieces and avoiding symmetry. You may even struggle to find matching sofas and chairs in 2024.

6. Large Overbearing Sofas

Once loved were the huge overpriced and overbearing sofas that were up at half of the living room space. 

However, this trend is set to discontinue, and instead of people opting for a much more mid century modern approach with unique chairs that, of course, do not match. 

Will it be more uncomfortable? Maybe. Will your room look more stylish? Absolutely. 

If you’re not quite ready to let go of your sofa, then finding a smaller, two seater will keep you on trend. Oh, we’re also saying goodbye to curved sofas - they will be missed.

7. TikTok Purchases

In 2023, we saw a huge rise in TikTok home decor pieces, specifically the bedrooms and living rooms. 

This often looked like huge statement rugs, vintage looking mirrors and bold prints. Most of which were cheap and low quality.

With that in mind, in 2024 we are heading to a much more quiet luxury theme and instead of overbuying items, we are instead opting for one or two more expensive items. By doing so, you create a far more timeless home aesthetic that will stand the test of time.

After the decline of minimalism, this is something we can always be glad to see.

8. Only Using Light Woods

Yes, mis-matched woods are back!

Light wood seems like the best option at first, however, we are slowly coming around to using darker woods in common areas. By doing so, you can create a room with far more depth and character. 

Don’t get us wrong, this can seem intimidating at first, however, you should have fun with this design trend and experiment. Once done correctly, you can transform a once bland room to something more inviting and cosy.
