Planning a kitchen renovation is such an exciting experience!! You finally get to make your house exactly how you like it and since we spend so much time in our kitchens, this is a home renovation that you should prioritise!

However, with so many styles to choose from, planning a kitchen renovation can quickly become overwhelming (and costly when done ineffectively).

Which is why I wanted to create this guide on planning your kitchen renovation where I break down everything you need to know to kickstart this process!

How Long Will a Kitchen Renovation Take?

But before we get into everything you need to know to start planning your kitchen renovation, you need to consider the impact of how long it will take.

A full kitchen renovation usually takes around six to eight weeks, however, if it’s a particularly complex design, it may take up to 12 weeks.

This is a long time to have your kitchen not in use so you need to make sure that you have planned for that circumstance

I highly recommend planning your kitchen renovation during the spring as not only will there be more light hours in the day for work to be completed but it will also mean that cold dinners will be far more appealing!

What To Know When Planning Your Kitchen Renovation

Now that you know how long a kitchen renovation may take, here is everything you need to consider when planning your kitchen renovation.

1. Define Your Kitchen Style

The first thing you need to consider when planning your kitchen renovation is the type of style you would like to go with.

From a traditional interior to a contemporary space, there is so much variety in creating your perfect kitchen.

The most popular styles of kitchen that I’m seeing everywhere at the moment include country kitchens, farmhouse kitchens and Victorian style kitchens.

Pinterest is a really great place to get inspiration for your kitchen renovation. Simply type in ‘kitchen ideas’ and you’ll have a variety of photos that you can take inspiration from.

2. Ensure Your Kitchen Measurements Are Accurate

It’s important that when you are measuring your kitchen cabinets or any additional decor that you are measuring the kitchen accurately.

If you’re not confident in doing this, I highly recommend hiring a professional to do it for you as you can end up spending so much money on furniture that doesn’t accurately fit the space.

3. Your Budget For The Project

I really do think that kitchen renovations can be done on a budget, however, you just need to know how to spend that money wisely.

When getting quotes for the work done within the kitchen, you should speak to multiple people to ensure that you’re getting the best deal.

However, just because somebody is cheaper doesn’t necessarily mean you should go with them. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is!

Going for quality is definitely better than a cheaper price as you don’t want to end up spending more money fixing whatever goes wrong.

4. Consider Hiring an Interior Designer

Interior designers are not just for the rich and famous. You can hire an interior designer on a budget to design your home.

By hiring an interior designer, you also get access to their contacts so you know that the job will be done correctly and in an inefficient manner.

They will also be able to help you hire a kitchen building and fitting team and an architect which will save you so much time.

5. Prepare Your Kitchen For The Project

If your project is big and time-consuming, the builders may be able to fit a temporary kitchen where you can have access to a worktop, kitchen sink, fridge and electric hob.

However, if your project is smaller, you may not have access to your kitchen during this entire time, so you want to remove anything from the kitchen that you might need.

You will also want to minimise clutter as much as possible to make space for the builders clean and clear.

6. Visit The Kitchen Often

If you’re renovating a kitchen in a home that you’ve not yet moved into, it is important that you visit often just to make sure that everything is looking exactly like you would like it to.

This is also a great time to ask any questions about the kitchen renovation and you’ll be able to make crucial decisions before they are finalised.
