How to Set up a Small Bedroom To Maximise Space

How to Set up a Small Bedroom To Maximise Space

Decorating any room can be a challenge within itself, especially when you have limited interior design knowledge, but a small bedroom can be particularly difficult.

The main aspect you should be going for when redecorating a small room is making sure to maximise space so that the room can reach its full potential and you can avoid creating a cluttered space.

But knowing how to do that effectively is tough!

Which is why I have created this blog post where I explore ways of maximising the space in a small room to create a cosy, yet breathable feel.

1. Choose Furniture With Storage

Furniture that has storage is going to be your best friend when working with a small room.

Beds with storage boxes are your best bet as they will provide a lot of space. Choose to have all your belongings under your bed or some people even use the underneath of their bed to store clothing and shoes.

Alongside having a storage bed, you can also opt for nightstands and desks that add additional storage space into the room.

The Rockaway Bedside Table from Cox & Cox is gorgeous and practical with a drawer for storage.

2. Position Your Bed

The position of the bed is going to play a huge role in making more space in your room.

In most rooms, I love to make the bed the statement centrepiece, however, in smaller rooms placing the bed in a corner or pushed against a wall is a far better option.

With a cute bedside table it can still look really good!

This small yet beautifully designed bedroom by Topology shows how effective the right bed placement can be!

3. Select Large Mirrors

Strategically placed mirrors are going to help to reflect sunlight and make the room feel so much larger and brighter.

I would even say to have multiple mirrors in the room, on the opposite walls, so that you’re creating a much more open space.

Floor length and large hanging mirrors will help to maximise the openness in the room.

These stunning mirrors by Cox & Cox would look gorgeous in a bedroom.

4. Purchase Shelving

Shelving is another great storage solution.

Shelves can be used to store more than just books and they are a great way to create more space in your room.

Adding multiple shelves to a room is one of my interior design hacks!

5. Select Multi-use Furniture

Having multi-use furniture such as a folding desk and even having a sofa bed in your room can really help to create the illusion of more space.

These types of furniture means you get to decide how much space they take up in your room and they are very practical too!

6. Be Selective With Your Colour Choices

In small bedrooms you’re really going to want to make sure to opt for lighter colours.

Deep reds, blues and greens are really going to make the room far smaller.

Instead opt for colours such as pastel greens, blues, whites and creams.

7. Choose a Narrow Wardrobe

There are plenty of wardrobes online which are just single door wardrobes - make sure to use them!

These will take up less floor space and they make for the perfect opportunity to cut down on the clothing that you have!

8. Choose a Headboard With Built-in Storage

This is one of my favourite hacks for small bedrooms, headboards with built-in storage!

You can find headboards with built-in shelving which not only creates an amazing visual statement but will maximise your space too!

9. Choose a Neutral Colour Scheme

Just like with the walls of your room, when selecting bedding, cushions, carpeting and any type of accessories, going for a neutral colour scheme is going to make the room feel a lot more calming and less cluttered.

Etsy has some great options when it comes to neutral cushions. These are both from Ellen Vale Interiors.

10. Prioritise Daylight

Usually in small bedrooms you’re only going to find one small window, so you need to make sure that that window is not blocked by furniture!

The more daylight that there is in a room, the brighter the room is going to feel.

I would also suggest ditching the heavy curtains and opt for blinds instead!!

11. Embrace Minimalism

Having a small bedroom is the perfect opportunity to cut back on the things that you own and create a more minimalist space.

By only keeping the things that you love and functional pieces, you can design a bedroom that is calming and peaceful.

12. Regularly Clear Out

Finally on this list of small bedroom ideas is to have regular clear out!

Whether it’s every single month for every couple of months, going through your bedroom and throwing out any rubbish or things that you no longer need is a great way to keep your bedroom feeling bigger than it is. Look to Marie Kondo for some excellent organisation tips!

Key Takeaways on How to Set up a Small Bedroom To Maximise Space

That concludes this blog post on how to set up a small bedroom to maximise space!

Just because you have a smaller space doesn’t necessarily mean that the room can’t be comfortable and calming.

From using mirrors to maximise space to purchasing multifunctional furniture, there are multiple ways that you can create a space that you love!
