Outdated Interior Design Trends For This Year

Outdated Interior Design Trends For This Year

Interior design is always involving, and what was once fresh and modern can quickly begin to feel tired and overused.

But staying ahead of the curve doesn’t necessarily mean chasing every feeding trend but being aware of what is falling out of favour can help you create a space that is current and authentic.

As we move into a new season of design, here are some of the top outdated trends to leave behind and what to do instead

Fast Furniture

Mass-produced and low-cost furniture might be appealing for its convenience and affordability they often sacrifice their quality and durability.

Over time, fast furniture can become outdated and look used, so it needs to be replaced more frequently.

Instead, invest in high-quality pieces that stand the test of time.

When looking for furniture, look for timeless silhouettes, sustainable materials and solid wood construction that you know is durable.

Plus, vintage and secondhand furniture offers character whilst still having eco-friendly value.

Overly Themed Rooms

Whilst there’s nothing wrong with drawing inspiration from a theme, going all in can feel overbearing and forced.

Instead, blend different styles in a subtle way. For example, rather than an entire coastal-themed room, incorporate natural textures like soft linen for a beach vibe without going overboard.

Quote Art

Inspirational quotes in cursive were once everywhere but now they feel like a total filler design choice rather than a thoughtful choice.

It’s the easiest way to make your home feel generic and not unique to you.

Instead, replace generic quote art with personal or unique wall decor like original photography and artwork such as abstract prints or sculptures that reflect your style.

Overuse of Barn Doors

Sliding barn doors have had their moment, but they’re quickly becoming outdated. And a lot of the time, the doors don’t fit with the overall design of the home,

Instead, you can always implement other door designs, such as sliding doors or Crittal glass doors.

Too Much Minimalism

Minimalism has certainly had its run with major influence on interiors for over a decade now, but extreme minimalism is quickly becoming boring.

Instead, embrace one minute or soft modern styles that keep the simplicity and clean texture of minimalism but add personal touches that add character to the space.

Plus small things like changing the door knobs and door handles to unique designs goes a long way. Make sure to check out my website to explore my selection of these!

Over Industrial Everything

Industrial designs such as exposed pipes, concrete floors and bulbs have been trendy in lofts and small apartments; however, now it’s quickly been overdone.

Again, you can always take inspiration from this style but blend into other styles so it doesn’t look so harsh.

Key Takeaways on Outdated Interior Design Trends For This Year

These are all of my outdated interior design trends for this year.

Ultimately, the best interiors aren’t dictated by trends but by personal expression.

It is helpful to be aware of what is currently trending and what isn’t, but the goal isn’t to constantly chase trends.

The goal should always be to create a space that you love to be in.
